First Book is a powerhouse literacy organization that provides access to new books for children in need. Over the last 21 years, they have distributed more than 125 million books and educational resources — at no cost — to 155,000 programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada.
Their resources help to:
- Elevate the quality of literacy programs,
- Enrich the learning experience for children in need,
- Enable teachers to create new curricula, and
- Impart a love of reading to children.
A cornerstone of the First Book program is their Marketplace, an award-winning, self-sustaining program that purchases new, high-caliber books and makes them available to educators and program leaders at affordable prices.
The Marketplace is open to programs where at least 70% of the children served are from low-income or military families or Title 1, eligible schools. Other organizations including shelters, clinics, libraries, museums, and more are able to sign-up.
Eligible programs receive access to the First Book Marketplace, the First Book National Book Bank, which offers free books (customers only pay shipping per book), and book grants available through First Book’s local Advisory Boards.
