The 7 Ways Cats Communicate

October 29th is National Cat Day, the purr-fect day to spend with and celebrate our feline friends! Whether your cat spends the day curled up in your lap, following you from room to room, ignoring your presence until dinnertime, or leaving you surprise gifts at your door, there are plenty of ways cats say, “I love you!”

Cats may not speak our language, but there are many ways that they communicate – like body language, sounds, and behavior. Learning and recognizing these signals can help us better understand our furry companions.

Let’s explore seven ways cats show us affection!

  1. Chirping: Your Cat’s Conversation Starter

Have you ever heard your cat make a short, high-pitched sound  that is almost birdlike? Cats sometimes trill or chirp when greeting familiar faces, getting excited, or reacting to something that grabs their attention. These little vocalizations are gentle reminders that cats have their own ways of communicating, and it’s important to listen!

  1. Gentle Purring: More Than A Happy Sound

Do you recognize that familiar rumbling? Cats often purr when they feel relaxed and content, such as when they are curled up against your chest. However, they can also purr when feeling unsafe or uncomfortable, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on their body language, too.

  1. Straight Tails: A Happy Hello!

A cat’s tail is  an expressive extension of how they might be feeling. When a cat’s tail is held in an “upright” position, this often signals a friendly greeting or a positive social interaction. Some cats approach their favorite people with these expressive tails announcing, “Hello! I’m so happy that you’re here.”

  1. Curved or Curly Tails: Curious-Minded Cats

Their tails aren’t just used for balance. A tail’s position matters; it can help communicate their mood and intention. Gently curved tails could mean that your cat is relaxed or ready for friendly interaction, but other tail shapes can mean something entirely different. When your cat discovers something new or interesting, keep an eye out for their posture; their eyes, tails, and overall stance could be telling you something critical!

  1. Swishing Tails: What’s on Your Cats Mind?

A swishing tail can be a meow-velous indicator of what your cat might be feeling. Unlike dogs, who wag their tails to express happiness, cats may swish, flick, shiver, or shake their tails to express frustration, excitement, focus, or overstimulation. If your cat’s tail begins to switch back and forth, it may be time to step back and give your furry friend some space.

  1. Crouched Cats: Get Ready to Play!

Ever noticed your cat in a crouched position, watching something (or you!) and wriggling their furry butts in the air? A crouched posture like this often signals a cat’s playful behavior! Cats use their bodies to express excitement, curiosity, and their readiness to get moving. Next time your cat crouches down, get ready to play!

  1. Curling Up or Away: Either Way Your Cat Needs Space

Body language is just as important as vocal communication. A cat that curls into a tight posture, retreats, or seeks a hiding place may be feeling nervous or overwhelmed. It is best to give your cat space instead of forcing an interaction – giving your cat a moment to breathe can help it feel safer and more comfortable. Respecting your cats’ signals is an important part of bonding and building trust. After all, caring for your cat means listening to what they have to say.

About Cat Communication

Cats communicate in all sorts of ways that we might never fully understand. While no two cats are alike, it’s important to recognize the signs when we can! While one cat might show affection through cuddles and snuggles, another one might prefer to just sit next to you and relax. The key is to pay attention to your cat’s unique body language and personality.
