"Yoder and Yoder are not typical relatives writing this collection of science mysteries. They are a father and daughter writing team. The elementary or middle school "voice" in these stories is most likely a product of Natalie, who began writing this series when she was a middle school student. The short science mysteries are similar to Encyclopedia Brown stories. A pair or trio of students encounter a mystery on one page, and in the format of many "minute mysteries," the explanation is revealed on the next page.

According to the copyright page, the intended audience is 8–12 years old. Besides independent reading opportunities, the format allows the teacher to use these for guided reading or read–aloud challenges. The authors make a smart decision in using a multicultural parade of names, and each story has a new set of characters. Clever titles and black–and–white pictures accompany every story. The witty titles include "Horsing Around," "It's Alien to Me," and "Order in the Courtyard." Finally, the mysteries are arranged according to content area: life sciences, Earth and space science, physical and chemical science, general science, and mysteries that can be solved with math.
